Dooling Wins Zoom’s ‘At The Races’

Trish Dooling of Paradise, Newfoundland is the ‘I Love Canadian Harness Racing Fan Club’s Zoom Photo Challenge winner for June.

Fan Club members were asked to send in shots that captured the theme, ‘At the Races.’ Contest officials were overwhelmed with fantastic submissions, and after narrowing it down to five, the poll determined the winner.

Dooling captured this shot of Blueberry Tea at St. John’s Racing & Entertainment Centre on a Sunday morning as a local amusement fair was setting up.

Dooling is no stranger to the camera, with her photos featured in Trot 4 Kids, on the cover of Trot Magazine as well as the ‘Heart of Harness Racing’ calendar. Her passion for photography started thanks to her father, who wanted to see how the horses looked when training – now she can be found taking over 1,200 photos on any given race day.

She has also been the photographer for the Newfoundland Harness & Labrador Harness Horse Owners Association Awards in the past, capturing the presentations and assembling beautiful tributes to the province’s top contenders.

Born into harness racing with both of her parents’ families heavily involved, her horses stand out thanks to their custom pink harnesses and halters. Blueberry Tea, featured in her submission, has been under Dooling’s diligent care for the last four years.

Purchased in a spur of the moment decision, Dooling calls it “one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” Known for her stature, the mare took after her sire, Collector Road, in the height department.

“She’s a delight to watch pace, as her strides are so big,” Dooling said. “She can cover a lot of ground quickly.”

Off to a late start in Newfoundland this year, Dooling can attest that her mare is training like a champ and she’s looking forward to the racing season.

Congratulations to Dooling and thank you to everyone who submitted photos, including our other Zoom finalists:
