This past Sunday (April 12), the 66th annual Spring Matinee Races took place at the Pinehurst Training Center in North Carolina. Photographer Timothy L. Hale was there and has assembled a special image gallery of the anticipated festivities.

Hale’s photo gallery from the event appears on the website of The Pilot Newspaper, which ran a preview story about the matinee races just days before.

The Pilot explains that the Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department and the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club are the organizations behind the matinee races. The day featured an opening ceremony, eight races and was the kick-off to celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the track.

“The Pinehurst Harness Track is an active and vibrant training facility, and it is rare to find a facility that has history and tradition in a community as welcoming as the Village of Pinehurst,” Garth Henry, the president of the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club, told The Pilot.

“We are excited to celebrate another milestone this year for the Village of Pinehurst with the Centennial of the Pinehurst Harness Track,” Nancy Fiorillo, the mayor of the Village of Pinehurst, was quoted as saying. “The Harness Matinee Races provide an exciting opportunity for Pinehurst’s residents and guests to experience a part of the Village’s rich heritage and certainly provides memorable experiences to all those who attend.”

I have been lucky enough to travel many times to Pinehurst. Literally stay across the street from the training facility. The facility is a throw back and beautiful. I wish I could have been there on Sunday to see the races, just to hear Earl Lennox's voice would be worth the trip.
