Arlanda Hanover Passes

Trot Insider has learned that Canadian-developed stakes winning trotter turned producing broodmare Arlanda Hanover has passed away.

The two-year-old of 2005 started slowly but ended her rookie season with a bang, knocking off the top fillies in the final of the Oakville (now Peaceful Way) Trot. After that triumph, the Mark Steacy trainee swept the elim and final of the Matron Stakes at Dover Downs before returning to Ontario and concluding her season with a win in the Trillium Series at Georgian Downs.

In a crop that boasted the likes of O'Brien Award finalists Merles Pearl and Pure Ivory in addition to Grand Circuit types like Passionate Glide, Arlanda Hanover amassed more than $450,000 in purses and recorded a summary of 5-4-1 from 11 starts.

While being turned out for the Winter, Arlanda Hanover suffered a career-ending injury and never returned to the races at three. The daughter of SJs Caviar became a broodmare for Adam Bowden's Diamond Creek Farm.

"She was not only a top notch broodmare for us but she was the farm's mascot/pet," Bowden told Trot Insider on Monday. "She enjoyed the attention and was an absolute pleasure to be around."

As a broodmare, Arlanda Hanover produced the now-exported Orlando (3,Q1:55.4f; $175,730) and the fast three-year-old from 2013, Celebrity Maserati (3,1:53f; $152,737).

Arlanda Hanover had colic surgery about three weeks ago, according to Bowden, and gave an embryo for transfer the next day. On Sunday night, she colicked again and passed away overnight.

"It has been an difficult day for everyone here," said Bowden. "We have had our fair share of losses over the years but this one is definitely the hardest."

Bowden reports that the embryo she gave after colic surgery, sired by Andover Hall, is "progressing normally" as of Monday morning.

"It will be hard to sell that one."

Arlanda was a real sweetheart as a racehorse. She gave us many thrills racing. Unfortunately she never had a chance to race to her full potential as she was injured after her 2yr old season. She was very fortunate to have had a top notch breeding farm like Diamond Creek to give her the loving care that she deserved. She will always hold a special place in our hearts. Kathy Steacy

RIP Arlanda Hanover. Wonderful horse that never reached her sky high potential due to a paddock accident. Sympathy to Diamond Creek and to Mark Steacy and his crew who had the pleasure to guide her to a great two year old campaign. Jim and Anne Feeley, Salt Hill

Deepest sympathy to all concerned, from all of us here.
