Red Shores’ CDP Weekend Preview

Red Shores has released its preview story for the programs of live racing this weekend at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

McMaverick To Use Rail Advantage In Saturday Feature

McMaverick has rail control and the form to deliver a victory in the $1,750 Saturday afternoon top class at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

First-race post time for the 12-dash card is 1:00 p.m.

John Holmes gets the call on McMaverick in Race 11 for owner-trainer Keith Campbell of Tyne Valley. The horse shows two wins, a second and a third with some less than favourable posts his last four starts.

The race will also feature Camcun (to be driven by Kenny Arsenault), Tempo Seelster (Vincent Poulton), Pinner (Marc Campbell), Western Bandit (Ken Murphy), Libertys Art (Gary Chappell), Honor Roll (Danny MacDonald) and Blue Star Outlaw (Jason Hughes).

Capitalism is favoured to win the $1,550 back-up pace (Race 7) for trainer-driver Hughes and owner Jason Collings of Mount Stewart. He will face eight tough opponents in Pictonian Zena (Shane Bernard), McJestic (Corey MacPherson), Windemere Maggie (Holmes), First Art Down (Brodie MacPhee), Van Zant (Ron Matheson), Sterling Seelster (Campbell), Freddy My Boy (Brian MacPhee), and Bowyer Hanover (Walter Cheverie).

Narragansett, Machinthesand Face Off Sunday

Narragansett and Machinthesand will finally face off again in Sunday’s $2,200 Preferred Pace (Race 12) after the latter was scratched last week.

The 13-dash card will get underway at 1:00 p.m.

Hughes trains and drives the outside starting Narragansett in the field of six for owner Foxyhall Racing of Wallace, N.S., while Brodie MacPhee will steer Machinthesand from Post 5 for trainer Mark Bradley and owners Noonan Holdings, and Russell and Karen Noonan of Middleton. Machinthesand scored a four-length victory in 1:55.1 over Narragansett in their last outing. Other entries in the competitive field are Blu Meadow Willie (Robert MacInnis), Doll R General (Mark McKinnon), Ultimate Luck (Arsenault) and Lucky Encounter (Cheverie).

Zip The Lip will have to navigate his toughest obstacle to date since starting his winning ways, as the son of Ken Warkentin has been assigned Post 8 in the $1,800 Open Trot (Race 6). Don Sweet co-owns and trains the trotter with co-owner Orville Willis, both of O’Leary, while Brian MacPhee handles the driving chores. Zip The Lip has been victorious in five of his last six starts, but has been able to secure the lead early on in the majority of those wins, and a top notch group of trotters will not make that easy this week. Who Took That (Mike McGuigan) has the rail and has shown some gate speed in her east coast campaign, and former king of the open trotters Caliban Hanover (Ron Gass) will start from Post 4, while Zip The Lip’s arch-rival Abundaspin (Harold Shepherd) has Post 7. Other entries include Saulsbrook Balance (Willie Murphy), Diamond Mine (Brodie MacPhee), Wonderous Hanover (Corey MacPherson), Majian Dilion (Jim Ripley) and Tender N Kind (Steven Shepherd).

The back-up pace (Race 9) should be hotly contested, as three of the top mares in eastern Canada face off against some gritty male racehorses. General Luckypercy has Post 4 for driver Ron Matheson, trainer Jackie Matheson and owners Jodilynn Shepherd of Cambridge, Ont., and Jack Brown of Stratford. She will butt heads with Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares series champion Stayoutofmyaffair (Arsenault) with Post 5 and iron-sided claimer Le Fugueur (Campbell) with the rail. Also in the field is Veronicavermillion (Brodie MacPhee), Ebandtheboys (Murphy), Artist List (Bradley), and Cambest Kisser (Hughes).
