For Julie Walker of Owen Sound, Saturday night at Hanover Raceway was special in a number of ways. Walker, a 31-year old member of the longtime harness racing family so familiar to Hanover Raceway, sent out three horses from her stable on Saturday and picked up two victories. Oaklea Uptown was a wire-to-wire winner in the night’s feature trot, finishing in a time of 1:59.1.

However, the more special moment for Walker came a little earlier when she steered Sixth Man to her first career driving victory. After just recently earning her driver’s license, Walker floated her four-year old son of Duke Of York to the front and cruised to a 2:00.3 victory after setting fractions of :29.1, 1:01.2, and 1:31.2. As Walker and Sixth Man crossed the finish line, the grandstand erupted in cheers from her many local supporters.

Off the track, Hanover Raceway hosted Pepsi Night and fans enjoyed thousands of dollars in prize giveaways. As well, fans participated in the first qualifying round of the track’s Survivor Handicapping Contest. Twenty-seven of the 70 fans that played along qualified for the contest final which will be held of July 20th when the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots Series rolls into town.

The Survivor Handicapping Contest is sponsored by Country 93 radio and contestants can win a 58” Toshiba LED television, four passes to Music in the Fields in Lucknow, or golf for two at Cobble Beach Golf Resort near Owen Sound.

Survivor continues next Saturday night, as racing fans have another chance to pick a horse that finishes in the money in four consecutive races. Hanover will also host the first in a series of Summer Concert Series as the local band “The Castro’s” will perform on the patio rooftop from 9 to 11 p.m., weather permitting. Post time Saturday June 29th is 7:30 p.m.
