Is There A Football Game On?

Full of star-power, special effects and controversy, the Super Bowl Half-Time Show often garners just as much attention as the NFL championship game itself.

Last year's Super Bowl was watched by 111 million people. The half-time show, featuring Madonna, was viewed by 114 million people. That focus on providing upper echelon entertainment during the Super Bowl midway point took a turn in 1992. Fox Network produced a special episode of In Living Color and ran it in direct competition with the Super Bowl Half-Time show, that year featuring Gloria Estefan and Olympic figure skaters Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill. Fox was able to pull some 20 million to 25 million viewers from the CBS telecast, prompting a change in focus in 1993. The NFL, seeing they needed to go bigger and better, went to the biggest act in pop music - Michael Jackson. Jackson's 1993 performance set the bar and ushered in a new popularity for music's biggest acts to reach a massive audience with a different demographic.

This year Beyonce will headline the entertainment, with the half-time show airing at approximately 8:00 p.m. Harness racing's trainers and drivers recall their favourite past performances and share a few showstopping ideas of their own for the annual Sunday spectacle in this week's Standardbred Canada video feature.

Super Bowl XLVII will kickoff on Sunday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m. EST / 5:30 p.m. CST at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The AFC Champion Baltimore Ravens will collide with the NFC's San Francisco 49ers.
