SC Rewind: Picture Parade

SC Rewind: Picture Parade

This week's Rewind is the monthly feature Picture Parade. This time the selection of older photos are from about 40 years ago and involve a group of then "young" faces. These folks are all still with us and every one has pursued a lifetime of owning, training or driving horses as their chosen profession. Several are still active in various areas of the sport.

Opening Note - The same basic note will appear with most of the photos.

This group of pictures is not intended to include all of the people who were active in the sport 40 years ago and still with us. It is intended more as a tribute to the many who have been with us for the "long haul" as the saying goes. Also these photos are listed in random order.

Picture Parade

#1 - Can you identify this young lad as he appeared 40 years or so ago? That smile might give him away!

Picture Parade

#10 - And just who do you think this young lad might be as he appeared 40 years or so ago?

Bonus Photo

Picture Parade

These two fellows are not part of the above group and might be a bit difficult for our younger experts. If I am correct these two lads were related as brothers in laws. Neither one is still with us but I believe the son of one is. For the "Bonus Photo"  I try to choose pictures that go all the way from A to Z if possible.

Quote For The Week: Once again more of a short story.

A gentleman by the name of Chester MacDonald (brother of "Morrie") from Strathroy, Ont. ran a tack shop for many years, following in his father's footsteps I believe. Many years ago I was in his shop, looking at a jacket I was thinking of purchasing. Perhaps I was taking too long to decide which may have prompted Chester to say "I can tell you right now the only thing wrong with that jacket is that I'm selling it way too cheap!" And yes, I did buy it and wore it for many years.

Bonus Photo- Just a wild guess, Antoine (Tony) Grondis and George Zirnis’s father.

Oskar Zirnis

The correct answers to this week's " Picture Parade " photos are shown below :
# 1 - That fellow was Gord Waples
# 2 - That was a slightly younger Wm. "Magic " O'Donnell
# 3 - That man was Larry Walker
# 4 - Karen Fekete ( Hudon) ,taken at Flamboro Downs
# 5 - That is Jim Whalen
# 6 - The man is Barry Drury aka "Peewee" at times
# 7 - Jack Darling of Bulldog Hanover fame
# 8 - That gentleman is Scott McNiven . This one had people guessing but couldn't fool Gord Brown
# 9 - That is the one and only Paul MacDonell
# 10 - Couldn't fool anyone on this one as that is Stevie Condren

The Bonus picture was probably a bit too hazy and perhaps not well presented . That twosome was Anton "Tony " Grodnis and Oskar Zirnis ,both natives of Latvia who came to Canada as experienced handlers of trotters . Prior to his arrival at the Montreal tracks in the mid 1950's Mr. Zirnis raced successfully in Germany .They were brothers in law . George Zirnis, a well known Ontario horseman of Elmira is the son of the pictured Oscar Zirnis . Thanks for your interest in viewing and identifying these old photographs . Each and every answer is very much appreciated .

Just a guess but it could be George Zirnis’ father whose first name I believe was Oskar .

Could the bonus photo be Bud Fritz and Sonny Geisel ?

This week's Bonus Photo doesn't seem to be drawing any guesses . See if this helps . I stated For the "Bonus Photo" I try to choose pictures that go all the way from A to Z if possible. One of the gentlemen in this picture has a first name starting with "A" and the other has a last name that starts with "Z" . The A is not much help but a last name starting with Z leaves a pretty limited choice as his son is still involved in Ontario racing . I believe this photo was taken in Montreal and one fellow at least had just recently arrived in Canada from Latvia .Good Luck !
