SC Releases 2023 Q1 Quarterly Statistics Report

2023 Q1 National Racing Statistics

Standardbred Canada (SC) has released the 2023 Quarterly Racing Statistics for the country from the period of January 1 to March 31 compared to the same quarter last year.

The report is broken down by region and by racetrack with specific data in each province such as Breeding, Unique Starts, Average Field Size, Purse, Handle, and more.

Here are some of the highlights from the 2023 Q1 Racing Statistics Report:

  • The Atlantic region outperformed in all categories, Number of Races, Number of Starts, Unique Horses, Average Number of Starts, Average Field Size, Earnings per Unique Starter, Purse and Handle. There were four race days in 2023 versus three race days in 2022. This was due to seasonal closures and January weather cancellations in both years.
  • Average Field Size grew by 4 percent year over year from 7.3 in 2022 to 7.6 in 2023. The Atlantic Average Field Size increased to 6.5 from 5.8, Ontario's Average Field Size came in at 7.8 from 7.5, and the Western region increased Field Size from 6.7 to 7.0.
  • Handle increased by 10 percent year over year with a 46 percent increase in the Atlantic region, a 17 percent increase in the Western region, and a 10 percent increase in Ontario.  This is particularly noteworthy as wagering increased despite an 8 percent decrease in the number of races across the country.
