Call For Feedback On New Jersey Bill

On Thursday (Jan. 16), the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey issued a press release that urges horsepeople to submit feedback regarding a current piece of legislation.

The SBOANJ release explains that both the senate and assembly have passed legislation (A1045 / S2856), sponsored by assembly members Ron Dancer, Eric Houghtaling, Joann Downey and Senators Vin Gopal, Steve Oroho, to exempt horse boarding, maintenance and related services from the state sales tax. Horse boarding, maintenance and servicing businesses are required to register as a seller with the Division of Taxation in the Department of Treasury. Under current law, they are being taxed as ‘space for storage.’ The bill relieves these businesses and services from sales tax obligations.

The bill is now with Governor Phil Murphy for consideration. The more NJ residents that contact the Governor and ask him to sign the bill the better.

If you click here, the form contains a ‘message’ box where you can tell Governor Murphy how important the tax exemption is to our industry and ask for him to sign it. Please contact the governor before Monday, January 20 or the bill will be put into pocket veto and the process will have to start over.
