The public was ‘bang on’ when it came to its assessment of the who the horse to beat was in Monday’s ninth race at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Fern Hill Breeze was sent off as the odds-on choice to capture the $10,000 conditioned claimer, and he gelding rolled to a comfortable score in a sharp clocking of 1:54 for driver Louis Philippe Roy.

Roy got away in mid-pack early with the Patrick Shepherd pupil, but a bold move in the backstretch saw him rocket to the top. He cruised through middle panels of :56 and 1:25 before using a :29-second kicker to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Island Energetic in 1:54.1. Quint Largo was third.

Carl Kuepfer of Newton, Ont. owned the gelding, who was claimed following his fifth straight win. It was the 10th win of the season from 18 trips to the track for Fern Hill Breeze, who is now a 15-time winner to date. The lion’s share of the loot bumped his overall bankroll to just over $50,000.
