For the past 50 years Old Home Week has been producing memories that will last a lifetime and this year’s event was no different, especially for 23-year-old James MacDonald

.

MacDonald recently began his driving career, and after just two starts he recorded his first driving win during Charlottetown Driving Park’s Friday, August 21 matinee program aboard Tougher Than Tough.

The three-year-old Cambest colt got away sixth from Post 6 in the $1,200 10th race conditioner, but MacDonald made a bid for the lead just past the half. Tougher Than Tough responded well, kicking away from the field by five lengths for the victory in a career-best clocking of 1:57. Shadow Dancer (Kenny Arsenault) stayed for second and Cape Tryon (Mike Stevenson) rounded out the top three finishers.

For Tougher Than Tough, the win was his third in five starts. Trainer Kuri White shares ownership of the bay with local resident Emily MacPhee and Ricky MacPhee of Cambridge, Ont.

MacDonald, a younger brother of of Mark and Anthony, grew up on Prince Edward Island and moved to Guelph, Ont. over two years ago, where he began training horses. He has since recorded 134 wins with over $1.2 million in purse earnings while racing across Ontario.
