SC Rewind: Picture Parade - Barrie Memories

SC Rewind: Picture Parade - Barrie Memories
Published: April 22, 2023 02:09 pm EDT

This week's Rewind is another version of Picture Parade, a regular monthly feature where readers get to look at some old photos and, if they wish, submit who they think is pictured.  This time the central theme is all about the early years at the old Barrie Raceway.  Opened in 1973, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the start up of the new Raceway in Barrie, Ont.

Picture Parade

#1 - During Barrie's first full season of 1974,  the above horse had a tremendous year as a three-year-old competing on a number of  Ontario tracks.  Can you identify this horse? Unfortunately it looks as though the driver is not in the picture but I'll bet a lot of people know who he was as he drove this horse to every one of his wins that season.

Picture Parade

#2 - This horse and driver were regular participants at Barrie during the early years.  Can you figure out the driver and perhaps the horse? Let us know.  The two chaps at the far left were in many early year pictures as part of their duties for the track.

Picture Parade

#3 - This gentleman was a busy man at the time this photo was taken.  Although he is "hatless" in this picture he was known to wear a lot of different ones in his career at Barrie Raceway.

Picture Parade

#4 - This man was from the Barrie area and raced there a lot as a non-driving trainer.   He was an integral part of the new track from its beginning.  Can you name him?

Picture Parade

#5 - This man spent a lot of years racing (and often winning) at the Barrie track.  This photo may not have been taken at Barrie but the driver spent a great deal of time there throughout the years. Who is the pilot of No. 6?

Picture Parade

#6 - If you can name the driver in this picture you are pretty good.  This photo was taken following a victory in the final of the Huronia Pacing series.  Who is that fellow and if you can name anyone else please do so?

Picture Parade

#7 - This group of drivers were gathered to receive their awards for driving and training excellence.  Reps from the Molson Co. are at either end of the picture.  Can you name the four drivers and trainers?

Picture Parade

#8 - The pictured lady was a regular at Barrie and had considerable success with the horse W B McKlyo which accompanies her.  This veteran performer was 13 at the time the photo was taken and had won many races at the local track.

Picture Parade

#9 - This photo was taken following a "Powder Puff" race held at Barrie.  I recognize the two non drivers who were participating in the after race gathering but I don't have names for the drivers.  Let us know who you think they are.

Picture Parade

#10 - When Barrie Raceway shut down in 2001 this group of veteran drivers participated in a special event to mark the closure of the Raceway.  Can you name any or all of them? I am certain that all of them have left us.

Bonus Photo

Who Is It photo question

Can you identify this well-known driver who is accepting a silver piece from thoroughbred trainer Horatio Luro following a win in the Fort George Trot at Mohawk.  Let us know who you think it was.  I remember him well.

Quote For The Week: "I didn't know my name was John until roll call when I started school." - Quote from John Albert "Buck" Martinez, former major league baseball player and current colour commentator for Toronto Blue Jays TV coverage.
