Surrounded by his family, George Irvine Millar Sr. died peacefully at his home in Newmarket, Ontario on Friday, April 12, 2013 at the age of 89.

Born on July 30, 1923 in Ballycarry, Northern Ireland, George was in the Royal Navy Submarine Service and bravely served his country during World War II. George emigrated to Canada with his wife and two young sons in 1957 and lived his years with a passion for his family as well as harness racing.

As a partner in Millar Farms with his son George Jr. , Millar owned many horses over the past 40 years -- too many to mention -- with some of his favourites being Misty High in the 70’s, Rectory, Gold Cup & Saucer winner Little Black Book (who also turned out to be a foundation broodmare for the farm) Resurgent Dragon, Celestine Prophecy, Ball And Chain (first horse to go sub 1:50 in Canada), O'Brien Award winner Serious Comfort, Confederation Cup winner High On Emotion, Justanotherpoorboy, Camystic and most recently the speedy OSS filly Mindsweeper. The one thing you could count on with George Sr, whenever and wherever his horses were racing, be it Canada or the United States, you would always be able to find him right at the hub rail for every race! He will be deeply missed by his family as well as his many friends in racing.

Husband of 69 years to Christina, loving father to James (Vicki) and George Jr. (Sondra) and proud grandfather to Jamie, Ryan, Melissa and Ashley, and great granddaughter Julia. The family will hold a private service at Millar Farms at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, 36 Main Street S., PO Box 297, Campbellville, Ontario, LOP 1BO.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of George Millar, Sr.
