Century Downs is preparing to welcome back fans, horses and horsepeople for the 2022 season beginning Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2:15 p.m.

Opening day offers a 10-race card, and distaffers will find themselves in the spotlight in the fourth race feature for a purse of $10,500.

The six-horse affair has Stash The Cookies (PP2) listed as the 6-5 morning line favourite in what will be her debut for trainer Chris Lancaster following a claim from her most recent outing. The six-year-old daughter of Sunfire Blue Chip-Saucy B will be paired up with the newest member of the 1,000-win club, Phil Giesbrecht.

A streaking Pure Addition is a perfect seven-for-seven this year and she’ll look to keep that perfect seasonal record intact from Post 5 for trainer Brent Bodor and driver Brandon Campbell. She’ll be looking to add to her $100,387 bankroll off the claim for new owner Aurel Vodon of Manitoba.

Century Downs has 56 dates lined up for 2022 from February 26 through November 5. Racing will take place on Saturday afternoons until Tuesdays cards are worked into the mix beginning on April 19.

Fans will hear a familiar voice calling the action on Saturday with Shannon 'Sugar' Doyle filling in this week for regular announcer Murray Slough. Doyle told Trot Insider that he plans to be involved with the race-day production going forward in his new role as Racing & Wagering Development Manager, providing insight and handicapping selections during the simulcast.

"We're all looking forward to opening day; opening day of a brand new meet is always special," said Doyle. "A lot of the guys were looking forward to heading to the smaller track. Some horses get around the mile alright, and some horses corner a little better around the smaller surface."
