Winbak Farm has reported the passing of trotting stallion Crown Prince Gar, 2, 2:01.4h; 3, 1:57.4; 1:57.1f ($231,862). He was 24 years old.

“Crown Prince Gar was a favourite of the team,” said Jack Burke, Winbak Farm General Manager. “He had a unique spot pattern that made him stand out and between his looks and personality, he was very loved.”

Crown Prince Gar was bred by Winbak Farm and was named after Garrett Bell, Winbak Farm’s former General Manager and Winbak Farm owner Joe Thomson’s nephew.

“Crown Prince Gar was one of the first foals bred by Winbak Farm to stand at stud,” said Thomson. “We owned him during the entirety of this life and he held a special place in our hearts.”

As a racehorse, Crown Prince Gar won 16 times. He was a former two-year-old colt trot track record holder at Harrington Raceway (a record he held for seven years).

At two, Crown Prince Gar was second in an Arden Downs Stakes division at The Meadows and was third in a Kentucky Sire Stakes leg at The Red Mile and a Reynolds Memorial Stakes division at Pocono Downs.

At 3, Crown Prince Gar won two Maryland Race Fund divisions, at Ocean Downs and Rosecroft Raceway. He was second in Landmark Stakes at Goshen Historic Track and the Old Oaken Bucket at Delaware Country Fair. He was third in the Connors Memorial Final at Hazel Park, Kentucky Spring Championship final at The Red Mile and Matron Stakes elimination at Dover Downs.

As a stallion, Crown Prince Gar stood in Ontario in 2005 and in Delaware from 2006 to 2016.

From 21 horses born, he was the sire of All Shoes On Deck, 1:54.4f ($336,944), Odessa, 1:55.3 ($199,016), and Whichwayrightrleft, 3, 1:58.1f ($173,927). His offspring averaged $84,865 per starter.

“Crown Prince Gar was able to enjoy his well-deserved retirement with the best of care,” said Burke. “He will be missed; he was one of the first trotting stallions that we stood in Delaware and helped improve our Delaware breeding program to what it is today.”

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Crown Prince Gar.
