Gregory Todd Smith, aka “Watson,” of Surrey, B.C. passed away on Nov. 24, 2022 at the age of 54 after suffering a sudden medical event.

Greg was born July 17, 1968, the second son of Wendell and Betty Smith in Calgary, Alta. Greg is the third generation from the Smith racing family, which started with his grandfather Cyril in the Maritimes; his father Wendell, who was named Horseman of the Year in 2005 at Fraser Downs; and his uncles Elmer, who found his way to Boston, Massachusetts, Clark, who is an inductee in the Hall of Fame in Charlottetown, P.E.I., and David, who he raced alongside of at Fraser Downs.

Greg was an owner, trainer and driver who got his first lifetime win on July 16, 1994 on a horse named Eighteen Wheels, who was owned by his uncle David and aunt Diane (West Coast Stable). The horse business is truly a family business.

Greg leaves behind deeply mourning his sudden loss his “Ma” Betty, brother Darcy and best friend Jason, all of Surrey, B.C., as well as uncles Elmer (Joan), Clark and Neville (Helen), aunts Marjorie Ann, Diane, Maureen and Carolyn, and many cousins and friends.

Greg was predeceased by grandparents Cyril and Marjorie Smith, Phyllis Mckinley, father Wendell, uncles David and Grant, aunts Eleanor, Dorothy, Claire and Lori.

To know Greg was to love Greg. His laughter was infectious and made your day better just by being around him. He will be forever missed.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Greg Smith.
