More than 2,000 fans flocked to Sandown Park for the opening day of the Vancouver Island three-day meet on Saturday.

It was Kids Day Out and families took full advantage of the magnificent summer weather to enjoy a great day of fun and entertainment.

The Teddy Bears Picnic, Tickles the Clown Show, crafts and rides kept the kids happy and entertained while moms and dads enjoyed music, and watched and bet the small but exciting race card.

"Its been a great team effort," said David Aldred, executive director for the BCSA and BCSBS. "The BC Standardbred Association, the Sandown staff and Fraser Downs staff have all made this day come together and it's worked extremely well.

"Sandown manager Chris Adamson and his staff have really done a great job getting the venue ready and presenting it. There has been a lot of hard work go into this event and we couldn't be happier with the way this event has turned out."

With nearly $50,000 bet at the Sandown mutuel windows, the pari-mutuel windows were busy and the fans lined up for food and drinks as well.

Besides the racing action this Saturday, August 19 at Sandown, fan entertainment will come via Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Day, with fashion shows and a fashion competition with a $2,000 diamond for first prize.
