With the finalists for the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots determined, a pair of $20,000 events for those who missed the final highlighted the Thursday (Sept. 29) card at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
One Last Wish spurted from the inside post and refused to let anyone in front to win the dash for two-year-old pacing fillies. Driver Paul MacDonell dashed the daughter of Bettors Delight to the lead to a :27 first quarter and kept rolling as Ashlees Sweetie pushed first over into a :55.3 half. Ashlees Sweetie then faltered from her bid to three-quarters in 1:23.1 and One Last Wish coasted for the finish 2-1/4 lengths in front of pocket-sitter Blue Glamber in a 1:52.3 mile. Chakka closed for third and Virtual Kiss finished fourth.
Trained by Ken Sucee for owners Brian and Dr. David Legge, One Last Wish won her third race from 10 starts and has now banked $37,736. She paid $10.20 to win.
Verdun vaulted to victory in the $20,000 dash for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Driver Louis-Philippe Roy sat sixth with Verdun to a :27 first quarter and travelled up the rim through a :56.2 half and to three-quarters in 1:25 before sprinting home in :26.4 to win by 1-1/4 lengths. Shadows Terror ripped off a pocket trip to take second with Scribblers closing for third.
Jean Tourigny conditions Verdun for owner-breeder Roland Trudel. The son of Bettors Delight won his second race from eight starts and has now earned $31,652. He paid $3.90 to win.
