2020 Kawartha Meet In The Books

Kawartha Downs concluded its 2020 meet on Saturday (Sept. 26) with the track's largest mutuel handle of the season as well as a big payoff.

The track handled $31,286 in wagers during the 11-race card, which was highlighted by a huge upset win by Imacutelildolly, who was sent off as the longest shot on the board in Race 3. After having been sent off at odds of 97-1, the filly fired from second-over and went on to post a half-length victory in 1:58.4. The big upset produced a $197.70 win mutuel

Trainer Annemarie Colville was very emotional after the big win. On September 5, Colville saw her beloved horse 'choke' and go down just after the start of the race at Kawartha. With her big upset on Saturday, the three-year-old filly came back and notched her first career win, and it came with Colville's partner, Mike Wade, in the sulky.

Nick Boyd captured the driving title at the Peterborough-area oval, which was his first at Kawartha.

The 2020 KD training title came down to the last race of the meet, and when all was said and done it was Murray Brethour that captured the honour.

Earlier in the week, Kawartha's president, Richard Weldon, said that the track is "pretty confident" that it will be able to negotiate a deal with Ontario Racing to see live racing continue in 2021 and beyond.

"We're at an early stage of discussions to keep going," Weldon said. "We're pretty confident, but we don't have anything concrete."
