On the same night Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees was breaking Lou Gehrig’s all-time Yankee hit record, the horse Jeter Marvel was winning a $20,000 claiming trot at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, Friday evening

.

Named after the popular Yankee shortstop, the five-year-old gelding trotter won the 13th race with a time of 1:57.4 over a sloppy racetrack on a cool damp evening.

Anthony Napolitano, who collected four wins through the first 13 races, was in the sulky with Jeter Marvel, a winner of six of 24 starts in 2009. Chris Oakes, the track’s leading trainer, only had the horse one week after his wife, Susan, had claimed Jeter Marvel on September 4 from Anthony Napolitano.

And for the third straight week Jeter Marvel was claimed again Friday evening.

The $25,000 claiming pace Friday night was won by Tough Love, giving driver Andrew McCarthy one of his six victories on the 16-race card. Tough Love edged Glors Boys (Kevin Sizer) and Mr Hallowell (Tom Jackson) at the wire.

John Butenschoen trains Tough Love, who won for the third time this season in 25 starts.
