Please Babe Pleases At The 'Ocean'

The sixth race on Ocean Downs' Sunday evening card ended up being a dandy. The Delaware-trained Please Babe recorded a win for his trainer and owner Bethae Robinson.

The irresolute four-year-old mare won at the wire by just a neck.

Before the race, Robinson was very unsure about her mare. "She's a very fast horse, but she make breaks all the time. If she doesn't make a break tonight it will surprise me." Please Babe was winless in 2009 out of eight races, with two lifetime wins.

Chuck Perry, Jr. drove the mare out of the four-hole, but settled in the sixth position by the time the leader crossed the quarter mile marker in 28:3. Please Babe made its move after the half-mile marker, going three-wide to get into third place.

"It was like someone shot her out of a cannon, boy that horse is fast," described Perry about Please Babe's run down the homestretch.

Coming around the final turn, three lengths separated the mare from the leading horse, but the 24 or-so feet quickly disappeared as Please Babe pleased its owner and flew to the wire first in 1:59:1.

"She made me happy today. Chuck told me she could win, but I wasn't sure. She is a fast one but her breaks never let her race to her full potential. She got it right today though," said a very pleased Bethae.
