Schickedanz Barred; Wake At Noon Euthanized

The Ontario Racing Commission has launched an investigation into the death of former Canadian thoroughbred of the year, Wake At Noon, who was euthanized following a tragic training accident at Woodbine Racetrack

on Tuesday, June 29, 2010.

The career winner of $1.6 million was humanely destroyed after he broke down during a workout at Woodbine Racetrack. The 13-year-old, who had not raced since 2007, had recently been put back into training by owner Bruno Schickedanz after the fan favourite had limited success in the breeding shed.

Woodbine Racetrack has indefinitely barred Schickedanz, along with Wake At Noon’s trainer at the time, Tom Marino, from racing and stabling horses at Woodbine as a result of the incident.

Schickedanz, who has 30 stalls at Fort Erie Racetrack, is still permitted to race at the border oval pending the findings in the ORC’s investigation.

Greed doesn't even come close to describing this. How can you put a 13 yr old back on the track that has made you 1.6 million. Ban him for life.

im fairly cetain that thoroughbred rules do not permit a horse to race after 19 years of age unless the have won in the previous year, 13 years old, and hasn't raced for 3 years...... they should be banned for life.
