Grassroots Trotters Motor Over Mohawk

Woodbine Mohawk Park featured two divisions of Leg Two of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots for three-year-old trotting fillies on Monday (July 3) evening and Southwind Chardnay and Northern Charlotte took home victories in their respective divisions.

Southwind Chardnay (Tyler Borth) posted the faster of the two Grassroots times, winning her $22,600 division by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:54.4.

Borth rocketed out of the gate from post eight to take over the lead with Southwind Chardnay. The three-year-old daughter of Resolve controlled the tempo in :27.2, :57.3 and 1:26.3 before taking off to victory. Seniorita Solo (Trevor Henry) followed on Southwind Chardnay's heels throughout the race to take second and Northern Magenta (James MacDonald) took third.

Southwind Chardnay is trained by Vernon Cochrane for Saulsbrook Stables Inc. Unraced as a freshman, the filly earned her third win in 12 starts. She paid $5.40 to win.

Northern Charlotte (Chris Christoforou) lived up to the hype as the bettors' choice as she won the $22,400 division in 1:55.3.

Northern Charlotte got away fourth from post seven as they went through the quarter in :26.4 and half in :57. Northern Charlotte followed Camco Erin second over through the three-quarters in 1:27. The Muscle Mass daughter came out on top in the stretch to win by a neck over Match Meif You Can (James MacDonald). Sister Twister (Trevor Henry) finished third.

Camilla Christoforou trains the winner of two races for Brad Grant. She paid $5.30 to win.

Louis-Philippe Roy steered both career-debuting winners of the two-year-old colt and gelding pace races. Best Night Ever ($62.80) stayed on the rail throughout the race before powering down the stretch for the upset victory by a length in 1:54.4. The Betterthancheddar-Before Dawn colt is trained by Anthony Beaton.

In the second division, Control The Piper ($20.30) went wire-to-wire to win the winner's share of the $16,000 purse in 1:54.3 by 1-1/2 lengths. Dan Lagace conditions the son of Control The Moment-Piper Seelster.
