Like Brother, Like Sister?

After Bulldog Hanover, the next foal of BJs Squall was 2021 yearling Buttercup Hanover. Jack Darling is certainly hopeful the apple doesn't fall far from that speed-producing tree.

Two years and three days after buying yearling Bulldog Hanover (pictured above) for $28,000 at the 2019 Standardbred Horse Sales Co.'s yearling sale, he plucked his Betting Line sister from the 2021 edition for $25,000. She mustered her first winning tally during the qualifying session on Friday (July 15) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

With driver Jody Jamieson at the controls, Buttercup Hanover made every call a winning one in her third qualifying effort. After confortable opening fractions of :30.3, 1:00.4 and 1:29.4, Buttercup Hanover paced home as she wished in :28 to hit the wire in 1:57.4, with more than three lengths to spare over her competition.

Buttercup Hanover is owned by Jack Darling Stables Ltd., of Cambridge, Ont.

The majority of the qualifying session is available below, with the stream starting on the second race performance of Buttercup Hanover.
