Horseman Mark Evers Killed In Shootout

Trot Insider has learned from multiple sources that horseman Mark Evers of Lebanon, Ohio has died after being involved in a shootout with police in Warren County on Tuesday (July 12).

Clearcreek Twp. police were called to reports of a domestic violence incident off Ohio State Route 48 on Tuesday night. An individual, identified as Evers, reportedly opened fire on the officers and shot one in the head. A second officer returned fire, killing the shooter.

The names of the police officers involved have not been released. As of Wednesday morning, the officer that was shot remains in ICU in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital but is breathing on his own and is responsive.

Evers, 65, started in the harness racing industry in the late 1970s. As a driver, he won 830 races with horses earning $3.6 million. Horses trained by Evers won 432 races and more than $4.7 million in purses.
