Stakes Stars Shine At Truro

It was a stakes-filled Tuesday at Truro Raceway, as stars of the Atlantic Sires Stakes were out in full force on the eight-race program.

In the first of the two $9,220 ‘A’ divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies it was Woodmere Jazz rolling to an impressive-looking score in 1:57.4 for driver Gilles Barrieau.

He had the daughter of Rollwithitharry-Shadow Dancer on the lead through fractions of :28.4, :59.2 and 1:28.4 before punching home in :29 to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Rhojo Moe. West River Glo was third.

Kevin MacLean trains the youngster for Reg MacPherson of Stratford, PE. She’s now 3-for-3 to kick off her career and she’s banked over $12,000.

Boo Yaya won as she pleased in her $9,220 division for the tandem of driver Marc Campbell and trainer Robert MacLeod.

After mixing it up early, Boo Yaya was treated to a ground-saving trip through middle fractions of :58.2 and 1:28. She sprung loose late and kicked home in :28.4 to win by a nose over Kinda Like Royalty in 1:57.2. Saltwater Storm was third.

Hugh MacEachern and Ali MacEachern share ownership on the daughter of Stonebridge Terror-Village Bound who now owns a 2-0-1 record from three attempts. She’s stashed away more than $11,000 to date.

In the lone ‘A’ division for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings it was Up Helly AA using come from behind tactics to win the $14,820 assignment in a time of 2:05.3.

Kenneth MacDonald got away third with the Clare MacDonald trainee, but he had the colt first up and driving on the way to the three-quarter pole. The son of Armbro Barrister-Burnt With Finesse used a :29.3 final frame to win by one-quarter of a length over Mr Miller. Race favourite Moonshine Monday took home third prize despite making a late break while on the lead.

Riley Farms Ltd of Summerside, PE owns the rookie who has put together a 1-0-1 record from two starts while racking up earnings in excess of $10,000.

Mr Finlay Ridge wrapped up the proceedings with a dominant score in the $15,560 division for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings.

Away second from the second tier, Mr Finlay Ridge was then marched to the front in the second quarter by trainer/driver Clare MacDonald who had her charge on top through panels of :59.4 and 1:29.3. Mr Finlay Ridge then used a :30.3 closing quarter to prevail by 3-3/4 lengths over Dusty Lane Milo in 2:00.1. Rich Daydreams grabbed the show dough.

MacDonald, who celebrated her 1,500th driving victory in the process, shares ownership on the gelding with Arnold Rankin and Ian Tate. It was the second straight score for the trotter who is 8-for-11 in his career. He pushed his lifetime earnings well over $50,000 with the win.

Windemere Miagrace went to the front and didn’t look back in the $3,000 ‘B’ division for two-year-old pacing fillies. She cut quarters of :29.4, 1:01.1 and 1:30.1 for driver Adam Merner before using a :29-second final frame to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Cutter Loose in 1:59.1. JJ Linda was third.

Ronnie Gass trains the daughter of Pang Shui-Someone Like You for Boys Will Be Boys 2 of Charlottetown, PE. It was the filly’s first lifetime victory.
