Atlantic Colts Set To Make Sires Stakes Debut Thursday

The 2023 Atlantic Sires Stakes season for two-year-old pacing colts will kick off on Thursday evening as part of Governor's Plate Week racing at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

With a 12-dash presentation starting at 6 p.m., the card will feature a trio of $11,420 A divisions for rookie colts. 

The first A division is scheduled as race six with Check Your Chip the top pick with pylon control for driver Myles Heffernan Sr., trainer Myles Heffernan Jr., and owners Greg and Lucas Bailey of Montague, P.E.I. The Arthur Blue Chip-Toujours colt was a 2:01.1 winner in his qualifier. His main opponents on Thursday include Tobins Barn Party (Jason Hughes) and Dunsan Harry (Corey MacPherson). 

Little Leroy gets top billing in the second division in race eight with Ken Murphy driving the Joe Baxter trainee for owner Boyd MacDonald Produce Ltd., of Crapaud, P.E.I. The son of Source Of Pride-Chorale Hanover won his qualifier in 2:00.3 at Red Shores Summerside. Merigo Magic (Adam Merner) is a top contender along with Jackies Boy (Heffernan). 

The final A division lines up in race 10 and Tobins Chester is the one to beat from post four for trainer/driver Hughes and owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I. The Shanghai Phil-Putnam MacKenzie colt is a brother to Atlantic champion Tobins Brownie. He has five opponents including Roll Your Coin (Mike Mcguigan) and Peter Pang (Merner). 

A pair of $4,000 B divisions for two-year-old pacing colts line up in races two and four.
