Trotting gelding Macallan is enjoying a renaissance season in 2022, and continued his winning ways on Tuesday (June 7).
The six-year-old son of Credit Winner won his fifth race in nine starts this season, rallying for victory in the top class $20,000 trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Macallan, with Scott Young holding the lines, settled in for a pocket trip as Free Willy Hanover (Jonathan Drury) set the tempo by clicking off fractions of :27.1, :56.4 and 1:25.1.
Hp Royal Theo (Austin Sorrie) made a push for the lead around the far turn, but it was Young who found room in the stretch and sent Macallan to the outside from the pocket to cruise past Free Willy Hanover en route to collecting the victory in 1:54.1 by half a length.
All Wrapped Up (Louis-Philippe Roy) came on late to take second spot while Truffles Too (Trevor Henry) finished third.
Macallan has registered seven top-three finishes in nine starts this season - including four wins in his last five starts - for $54,310 in seasonal earnings. He's rebounded well after managing only two second-place finishes and one third-place showing in 10 starts in 2021.
Owned by Gary Green of Puslinch, Ont., and trainer Tim Cherwaiko of Cambridge, Ont., Macallan has eight career wins and $104,050 in lifetime earnings. He paid $6.30 to win.
Trainer Laura Toscani also picked up her first career training win on the card courtesy Shesasharpshooter. Louis-Philippe Roy engineered the winning performance, positioning the pacer in the pocket through the first three fractions established by Queen Of Soul (Phil Hudon) and A Distruptor (Jody Jamieson). Roy vacated the pocket at the head of the lane, allowing Shesasharpshooter to set her sights on the leader. Through a :28.3 closer, Shesasharpshooter hit the wire more than a length in front to break her maiden as well as her trainer's, with the mile timed in 1:54.3.
The daughter of longtime horseman Gino Toscani, Laura picked up her first win in her 10th try.
