Farmers Tuition Lowers World Record

Free-legged pacing mare Farmers Tuition set a world record for the second time in just over a month with her sharp off-the-pace score in the $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace on Friday night at Mohawk Racetrack.

The seven-year-old daughter of Apaches Fame lowered her own world record for a free-legged pacing mare by one-fifth of a second with a 1:50.4 triumph in the ninth race for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Richard Moreau. She set the former mark on May 3 at Woodbine Racetrack.

After getting away third in the field of nine and being shuffled back to sixth, Filion manoeuvered Farmers Tuition out in the stretch to take over command and held off Greystone Ladylike (Scott Zeron), who closed from last, to win by a neck. Favourite Shelliscape (Steve Condren) rallied home off cover to finish third, one length behind.

Unred Hanover (Ron Pierce) was the first to fire from post eight and she put up opening panels of :26.4 and :55.3 before a third quarter battle with first over challenger Waasmula (Jody Jamieson). Meanwhile, Barockey (Anthony MacDonald) broke stride from the pocket. Unred Hanover hit three-quarters in 1:22.2, but the backfield began to close in down the homestretch.

Farmers Tuition paid $10.40 to win.

The victory was her fifth this season and 25th lifetime pushing her bankroll to $351,146.

The homebred mare is owned by breeder Debbie Bird of Harwood, Ont. along with Montreal's Gerrie Tucker.
