Shes Shocking was a fun race mare. What made watching her race even more fun was watching her owners and their family enjoy her each start for seven racing seasons while she earned more than $362,000. When Shes Shocking was done racing in 2017, it was a natural decision to breed the tough Electric Yankee mare, but the dream was short-lived as she left her second foal an orphan when he was just eight weeks old.
That colt, Last Shock, broke his maiden at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Thursday (June 22) – exactly three years to the day after Shes Shocking died. Chris Page drove the Racing Hill gelding to victory for breeders and co-owners Charlie Guiler and Scott Mogan.
“Last Shock made us all proud by winning his first race at Scioto Downs in 1:53 flat,” posted Guiler’s wife Debbie on Facebook. “At least I think I saw he won through all the tears!”
“She colicked, and they did surgery at Ohio State,” explained trainer Mogan, who also trained Shes Shocking during her entire racing career. “She came out of it good, ears up and bright eyed. Kelsey [Grose] picked her up and took her back to Hickory Lane Farm where she had been.
“But two weeks later she got bad again, and we had to make the tough decision [to put her down]. It was a tough decision to make because she was such a great mare for us, but the right decision for her. After, they couldn’t find a nurse mare, so Kelsey pretty much raised him, bottle fed him, at her farm.”
Last Shock reminds Mogan a lot of Shes Shocking – he’s built just like his dam with her same gait.
“Kayne [Kauffman] drove her…and drove him last week and said, ‘I really like this colt, he really reminds me so much of her.’ He can get off the gate just like her.”
Last Shock raced just five times a two-year-old in 2022 with $7,420 in earnings. So far in 2023 he has six starts and has hit the board four times earning $17,100. Looking forward, Last Shock is eligible to the Buckeye Stallion Series. Mogan thinks he’s going to develop into a pretty nice horse, but if he’s a good and competitive overnight horse, that will suit his connections just fine.
“Kelsey did a great job taking care of him. He’s grown a lot between his two-and three-year-old year. I give all the credit to her.”
Scioto Hosts Sophomore Pacing Fillies In Buckeye Stallion Series
Out of five divisions, two of the previous leg winners repeated in the Buckeye Stallion Series for three-year-old filly pacers at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Thursday night (June 22).
Although no winners from leg two were in the first division, it was the fastest division as Sectionlineseaside paced to the wire in 1:51.1. Brett Miller had the controls for trainer Steve Carter. The Downbytheseaside filly took a new lifetime mark in her second win of the year, now sporting $27,652 in earnings this season for owner Eric Good.
Chris Beaver trainee Onederfulbeach captured the second division in 1:51.2. Aaron Merriman launched Onederfulbeach from post two and never looked back, giving the daughter of Beachtrea wins in two out of the three Buckeye Stallion Series legs and three wins on the season.
Stormy Serena picked up a new lifetime mark of 1:52.1 in the third division. Kayne Kauffman engineered a winning wire-to-wire score for the Fear The Dragon - Rockin Serena homebred trained by Melanie Wrenn for breeder - owners Emerald Highlands Farm, Dolne Farm Services LLC and Wrenn Racing LLC. She's now three-for-four in 2023 with career earnings of $97,000.
High Flyin Filly and Racing For Three battled in the fourth division. Racing For Three started to put pressure on the leader Tre Rock (Brett Miller) as they hit the three-quarters in 1:24, but High Flyin Filly (Chris Page) followed the live cover behind Racing For Three in the final turn. As she went three wide there was no stopping High Flyin Filly as she drew away from the field in 1:52.4. Page had the lines for trainer Ron Burke as she got her eighth win of the season and has netted $79,379 in 2023. The daughter of Domethatagain has gone three-for-three in the Buckeye Stallion Series.
Post eight was no problem for Beautiful Seaside in the fifth and final split, as Brett Miller pointed the daughter of Downbytheseaside - Your Beautiful to the front and made every call a winning one en route to a 1:51.4 score. Melby Ober trains the Matt Rowe homebred, now a winner of six of her last eight starts with $69,210 in lifetime purses.
The fourth leg of the Buckeye Stallion Series for three-year-old filly pacers is Monday, July 17 at MGM Northfield Park.
Racing is held at Scioto Downs each Tuesday and Wednesday with a 3:15 p.m. first post and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with a 5:50 p.m. first post through Saturday, Sept. 16.
