Assigned the outermost post in the $12,000 featured pace, Armycaptin Hanover came flying for the lead in the back half to post a 1:53.2 victory on Saturday (June 10) at Century Downs as part of a training hat trick for Kelly Hoerdt.

Whiplash Smile spurted to a four-length lead to a :27 first quarter and kept rolling on a loose lead through a :56.1 half before the backfield came into action. Driver Nate Sobey launched a first-over blitz with Armycaptin Hanover out of fifth and swiftly collared Whiplash Smile past three-quarters in 1:24.1. The seven-year-old Captaintreacherous gelding kicked for home on a 2-1/2-length lead that he held to the end over Whiplash Smile, with odds-on favourite Ernesto Delacruz closing from last for third and Vegas Gambler taking fourth.

Hoerdt co-owns Armycaptin Hanover with Blair Corbeil. The gelding won his 35th race from 119 starts and has now earned $259,576. He paid $8.30 to win.

His victory completed a hat trick for conditioner Kelly Hoerdt, who won three of the first for races on the 11-race card. Hoerdt’s other wins were with Chocolate Terror (1:55 winning mile; $4 to win) and Somepeopleneedtold (1:54.2; $5.40).
