Bucktober Upsets In Western Fair Preferred

Bucktober continued his 2023 success after winning the $13,000 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Wednesday evening (May 3). 

As the gate pulled away, favoured Power And Grace (Brett MacDonald) was on the charge and early to the lead. Andy Over (Ed Hensley) followed in second and Tyler Borth and his trainee, Bucktober, were third. The field remained single file through the quarter in :28.4, half in :58.2 and to the three-quarters in 1:27.2. Bucktober and Borth made their move around the final turn, passing the leaders in the stretch to win by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:57.4. Power And Grace was second and Andy Over finished third. Off at odds of 7-1, Bucktober paid $16.10 to win.

Bucktober has had 17 wins in 34 career starts, totalling $90,848 in lifetime earnings. In 14 starts this season, the four-year-old gelded son of Flanagan Memory and the Conway Hall mare Armbro Equinox has had 10 trips to the winner's circle, earning him a spot as one of Canada's leading racehorses. Owned by Tyler Borth, William Borth and Karen Sparling, Bucktober joins Whatineedisaman, Wonder Of Love and Big Bad Jenn as double digit winners of this season so far, having now 10 wins.

Shoot The Whiskey maneuvered a first-over trip to win the $12,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace.

Shoot The Whiskey (Travis Cullen) got away sixth from post eight and held this position on the rail through the opening panel in :28.2. The Jodie Cullen trainee made a first-over move up the backstretch and surged forward through the half in :58.2. By the three-quarters in 1:26.2, Shoot The Whiskey had taken over. Cullen and Shoot The Whiskey opened up around the final turn and down the stretch to win by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:55.4. Must Be Nice (Tyler Borth) was second and Saulsbrook Jessie (Brett MacDonald) finished third.

A four-year-old daughter of Shadow Play and the American Ideal mare Arm In Arm, Shoot The Whiskey is owned by Paul Sanders, J J J Stables and Travis Cullen. She has a record of 13-5-5 in 30 career starts with earnings of $195,067.
