Time away from the track proved no foe to the reigning Shark Week as the Rod Hennessy student won his 17th straight pari-mutuel appearance in the $12,500 Preferred Handicap Pace at Century Downs on Saturday, April 13.

Shark Week made his last start on Jan. 6 before going on a hiatus until a qualifying session on March 16. He has showed no signs of wavering, winning his qualifier by 17-1/2 lengths in 1:53.4. On Saturday, he was back at the Calgary, Alta. oval with Mike Hennessy in the bike, going to the gate as the heavily backed favourite from post six in the field of six top pacers.

In similar fashion to his previous triumphs, Shark Week took the early lead and never looked back. He raced uncontested through panels in :27.3, :56.1 and 1:24.3 before continuing home to win by 4-3/4 lengths in 1:52.2. Carro B Bunsen (Logan Gillis) followed the pocket trip to second and Icy Blue Scooter (Nathan Sobey) grabbed third.

Shark Week has won his 42nd race from 76 starts, moving his career bankroll to $354,725 for owners Lorne Duffield and Rod Hennessy. The 2023 Horse of the Year in Alberta returned $2.20 to win.
