OSAS Horses On The Move

The winter months are traditionally slower for the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, but not this year, it seems. In the last few weeks, OSAS has seen three horses adopted from the program and a pair enter into it.

Recently Adopted

Magic Steel – The grey gelding Magic Steel (aka Milo) had a short stay with OSAS before finding a new home. The son of Cams Magic Trick was recently adopted by Dawn Harper and he’ll join HP Black Shadow who was also recently adopted by the Harper family from OSAS.

Although not destined to be a racehorse, with only four lifetime starts, Magic Steel does hail from top pacing bloodlines. His immediate family includes the great Fan Hanover, the first filly to ever capture the Little Brown Jug and North American Horse of the Year in 1981. Magic Steel’s third dam, Norah Dancer, is a full sister to Fan Hanover.

Elusive Hour – Also known as ‘Bob,’ Elusive Hour recently left OSAS as he was adopted by Amber Hill and family. A nine-year-old gelding by Royal Mattjesty, Bob earned just over $50,000 during his racing career.

From the Run The Table stakes winner Imoutahere, Bob’s half-sister is the Betterthancheddar four-year-old Better Single, who is currently racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park and closing in on $300,000 in lifetime earnings.

Flying Solo – The third OSAS graduate this month is Flying Solo. Hannah Thomas has adopted this seven-year-old gelding by Joey Anderson who made 92 starts during his racing career. His dam, the Precious Bunny mare Bete Feroce, died at birth which led to his name.

New To OSAS

Howdy Partner – A 15-year-old son of Hawaiian Cowboy, Howdy Partner is what one would call an iron horse, as he has made an incredible 310 lifetime starts. He retired with a summary of 40-51-43 for $142,000 in earnings. Fittingly, he won his very last lifetime start, on the final day he could race, December 31, 2019, at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

“When I bought him I was just hoping to break even,” his former owner, Craig Malott, said in a story regarding the horse’s career on the Standardbred Canada website. “He paid his bills every week, every month and he had a home. In my mind he’s done more than that. He’s provided me with a lot of thrills and a lot of great memories. Stuff that I can’t get back.”

Highlandmagictrick – This young daughter of Kadabra is another newcomer to the OSAS ranks. The four-year-old is a half-sister to $183,000 winner Highland Top Hill. She will start her training under saddle shortly and updates will be provided on the OSAS website, osas.ca.

OSAS would like to thank everyone who contributed to our successful adoptions, the foster families, those who put in the time training our retired Standardbreds and wish those who have welcomed OSAS horses into your care all the best.
