A last-to-first sweep of the field earned Chief Karen’s backers a handsome, pari-mutuel reward on Tuesday at Western Fair Raceway, and bettors who backed Doug McNair-driven horses did pretty good, too

Chief Karen, who was last at the half-mile marker in Tuesday’s $13,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred, staged a huge rush in the late stages of the mile en route to producing an 11-1 upset for driver J Harris and trainer Jean Louis Arsenault.

Chief Karen was in no hurry from her post three starting spot, but the same couldn’t be said for Windsun Rachel. That Jay Cochlin-trained mare shot to the top and sliced out splits of :27.2, :57.1 and 1:27 before she started to fade. Chief Karen made a bold, three-wide move going to the three-quarter pole and her :29.3 closing panel was enough to earn the half-length score over Notable Beauty in 1:57.1. Jinglejanglejingle was third in the seven-mare affair.

The five-year-old daughter of Camluck-In Your Dreams has put together a 2-3-2 record in 10 starts this season for her owner, David Lumsden of Ancaster, ON. The 13-time winner has banked more than $253,000 to date.

Doug McNair, on the eve of participating in the Ontario Regional Driving Championship, extended his lead in Western Fair Raceway’s drivers’ standings thanks to a six-win performance on Tuesday.

He took the opener with The Mistress (1:58.1) before returning to victory lane in the third race with Stonebridge Chase (2:00.4). He also clicked with On Tap (2:01.3) in Race 6, Aahm A Cammi (2:01) in Race 7, Musical Luck (2:00) in Race 11 and Forbidden Desire (1:58) in Race 12.

McNair has racked up 95 wins so far this season at Western Fair Raceway. The career winner of 1,145 races is less than $15,000 away from surpassing $10 million in lifetime earnings.
