The $10,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace on Thursday, March 14 at Fraser Downs was accompanied by two other headline achievements as Kootenay Cocoa continued her perfect eight-for-eight record and Cody Easton notched his first training win. To conclude all of the action, Gin Is Better scored in the feature distaff pace.
Owned, trained and driven by Clinton Warrington, Gin Is Better got away fifth. After panels in :26.4 and :57.1, the mare made her appearance in the top four off a first-over trip to the top. She began chipping away at the distance between herself and the 12-1 pacesetting Hotpieceoface (Allan Molloy), pulling ahead to the lead as they approached the three-quarters in 1:25.3. With full clearance ahead, Gin Is Better pressed forward to open up and win by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:54.4. Hotpieceoface took second and Mystic Shadow (Brad Watt) ended in the show spot.
Gin Is Better (Betterthancheddar-Red Star Ginny) is a six-year-old mare and winner of 10 races. She moved her career bankroll to $77,890 from 76 career starts. From 7-1 odds, Gin Is Better upset the field with a $17.60 return on her ticket to win.
In the card opener, Kootenay Cocoa ($2.10) extended her perfect career resume to eight starts and eight wins. Tyson Jacoby took the Kyle Chadwick student to a gate-to-wire triumph in 1:56.1 by 6-1/4 lengths in the $6,500 conditioned pace.
In race two, a $6,000 fillies and mares conditioned pace, Cody Easton earned his first career training win with Vintage Lass ($10.10). Kelly Hoerdt piloted her to a 1-3/4-length victory in 1:57.
