‘Wheels’ Fires In Mohawk Preferred

The six-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding Wheels On Fire wasted little time to grab the front and put away his competition to win the $34,000 Preferred Handicap Pace on Saturday (March 13) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Driver Doug McNair motored the Richard Moreau trainee to the point while Rockme Rollme landed in the pocket. Wheels On Fire passed the first quarter in :27.3 and grabbed a breather to a :56.1 half, prompting odds-on favourite Sintra—in his 2021 debut—to pull first over and advance towards the leader. Sintra ranged to match strides with Wheels On Fire by three-quarters in 1:24 but began to spin his wheels straightening for the finish. Wheels On Fire meanwhile scooted to a two-length lead before stopping the clock in 1:51.3. Sintra held second while Rockme Rollme finished third.

Owned by Brad Grant, Wheels On Fire won his 25th race from 71 starts, earning $421,723. He paid $8.60 to win.
