Carmen Auciello trainee Western Wish whipped by her rivals to go from nearly last to first and win the $32,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday (Feb. 11).

Majestic Virgin grabbed the lead from Sunday Afternoon by the quarter in :27.2 before Snow Shark shot out of third to then take over control coming to a :55.3 half. Snow Shark slowed the tempo to the final turn but still managed to open a gap on her rivals, passing three-quarters in 1:24.3 three lengths better than Majestic Virgin backing through the field from second. Odds-on favourite Swift Ally came calling first over with Western Wish on her back heading for home and that pair easily downed Snow Shark coming to the final eighth. But Western Wish had a bit more momentum when tipping off a helmet and edged a head in front of Swift Ally at the line to stop the clock in 1:53.4. Snow Shark finished third and Lauras Love took fourth.

A four-year-old mare by Betterthancheddar, Western Wish won her 12th race from 30 starts and now has earnings of $213,954. Louis-Philippe Roy steered the $19.90 winner for owners Aaron Waxman, Santo Vena and Nunzio Vena.
