Driver Robert Shepherd wasted little time in hustling The Steelman to the lead in Monday’s $10,000 Preferred-2 Pace at Western Fair Raceway, and the gelding had just

enough to hold on for 1:57.3 triumph.

The Steelman, who hangs his harness bag in the barn of trainer Terry Deters, sprinted to the quarter pole in :27.4 before backing down his speed on the way to the half. He reached that juncture in :59.1 before getting pressed to the three-quarter pole in 1:28 by Three Cents.

Despite feeling the heat from the persistent foe, The Steelman summoned up a :29.3 final frame to hold on to win by three-quarters of a length. Three Cents was a determined runner-up and Monster In Law rallied to finish third.

Steel A Mile LLC of Holland, MI holds the papers on the five-year-old son of Blissfull Hall, who won for the fifth time this season in 27 trips postward. The 18-time winner has banked $111,625 to date.
