In High Cotton Clicks In Closing Night Feature

Fraser Downs wrapped up its 2022 racing season Monday evening with a nine-race card, and the closing night feature was taken by In High Cotton in upset fashion.

The Kelly Hoerdt-trained In High Cotton was sent off as the longest shot on the board at odds of 5-1, and she rallied home in :29.2 for driver David Hudon to win in 1:54.2 over race favourite Miss Itunes.  The other Hoerdt trainee, Century Mach, was third.

The four-year-old daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-Olivette Hanover improved her 2022 record to 5-8-5 from 31 starts for Hoerdt and partners Blair & Erna Corbeil.  The nine-time winner has banked $126,467 to date.

There were a pair of scratches in that $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open Pace, and there were 16 scratches in total on the card.  After dealing with some weather issues that prompted the cancellation of an earlier card, horsepeople were given the option of scratching and a number of them went that route rather than race over a track rated ‘good’ with a two-second variant.

Brandon Campbell had the driving title wrapped up well before the closing card at Fraser Downs.  The reinsman racked up 123 victories over the course of the season to win easily over fellow sulky-sitters Kelly Hoerdt (105 wins) and David Kelly (78 wins).

Jim Marino staked claim to the training title in 2022 thanks to a 99-win season at the British Columbia oval.  He out-duelled fellow conditioners Kelly Hoerdt (89 wins) and Rod Therres (56 wins) to claim bragging rights for the year.

A 56-race date season was recently approved for the 2023 season at Fraser Downs.

A winter/spring meet will feature 28 dates from Feb. 2 through May 5.  Racing is then scheduled to resume with the remaining 28 dates from Sept. 14 through Dec. 15.
