A Day In The Life Of Random Destiny

Random Destiny has earned $541,223 in 27 starts over the last two years, so trainer Riina Rekila figures the three-year-old trotting filly knows her job

.

As a result, the reigning Gold Final winner heads into Saturday’s $300,000 Super Final off a laid back week that saw her spend more time in her paddock than on the training track.

“She has been very good. We haven’t been driving her too much, just twice since her last race,” notes Campbellville, Ont. resident Rekila. “She has had not too many times the harness on.”

At this stage in her career, a typical day in the two-time Gold Final winner’s life sees her outside all night with a companion, into the barn in the morning for breakfast and a nap, occasionally being hitched to a jog cart, and then back out into her paddock. Rekila and Esa Lahtinen, her partner in Overseas Farms Ltd., have also managed the filly’s schedule so that she was able to spend the occasional full week outside.

“We gave her some time off in the summer,” says the native of Finland. “She is in good shape. She doesn’t get tired at all.”

Rekila will steer Random Destiny from Post 3 in Saturday’s eighth race, and was delighted to see the Ken Warkentin daughter land an inside post position. The trainer-driver also believes the Woodbine oval will suit Random Destiny’s racing style, which has typically seen the filly charging up from the back of the pack.

“I think that’s good for her, a long stretch. She has been coming from behind so much,” notes Rekila. “I think that’s what she likes.

“I hope we have some luck,” she adds. “You never know what will happen, but hopefully we have some luck.”

All eight of Saturday evening’s $300,000 finals will be aired during a special three-hour special on The Score. The show kicks off at 8:00 p.m and airs until 11 p.m. WEG will also be offering a $50,000 guaranteed pool for Saturday's early Pick-4 wager in addition to offering Superfecta wagering on all of Saturday's races.
