Driver Travis Cullen capitalized off a pocket trip with Rachel Andrew trainee Brodys Scrapper to take the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 Pace on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Sent the 6-5 favourite, Brodys Scrapper secured the striking seat behind pacesetter Pat Mcgarry A to a :28 first quarter. With minimal challenge through a :57 half, Pat Mcgarry A motored up the backside to three-quarters in 1:24.4, but the swift pace shift proved tiring off the final turn. Cullen kicked his charge off a helmet coming for home and surged to the lead with ease to down Pat Mcgarry A by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:53.3. Outlawgrabbingears gave chase to the top two to take third while Quick Tour rallied off a pylon trip for fourth.

Owned by Cullen and Andrew, Brodys Scrapper scored his sixth win from 15 starts this season and his 41st from 186 overall, earning $315,511. The 10-year-old Mach Three gelding paid $4.10 to win.

Tuesday’s card also featured a single $8,500 dash for the second preliminary of the Autumn Series for two- and three-year-old trotting fillies. P C Free Wheeling delivered as the 1-5 favourite with a coast-to-coast effort off splits of :30.2, 1:02.2 and 1:33.2 to win in 2:02.3. City Lady drafted from the pocket to finish second while Jula Marianette took third, beaten another five lengths, and Jandals finished fourth.

Scott Young steered the sophomore daughter of Wheeling N Dealin to her second win from three starts, good for $8,020 in purse earnings for the Amy and Curtis Clements homebred. Peter Clements trains the $2.50 winner.

A special $7,500 class went to post composed entirely of racing veterans in a condition restricted to pacing standardbreds aged 11 or older. Another front-stepping effort proved victorious when Twilite Zone landed in the winner’s circle with a 1:56.2 mile. The 11-year-old Astronomical gelding led to every pole through fractions of :27.4, :58 and 1:27 while holding off pocket-popper and odds-on choice Always N The Money in the lane by three-quarter lengths. Leafs And Wings closed to finish third and Lawmen Reign took fourth.

Trained by Keith Oliver for owner Kenny Oliver, Twilite Zone won his third race from 19 starts this season and his 41st from 262 overall, earning $211,801. Natasha Day drove the $12.70 winner.
