Macallan Dominant In Mohawk Qualifiers

Macallan made his 2023 debut a winning one in the Friday (Jan. 27) morning qualifiers at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Macallan drew the far outside in the eight-horse field with Scott Young in the bike for the morning qualifiers. As the wings swung open, Macallan and Young hit the gas to make it to the top first. Once the pair cleared the front, they never looked back. At the :30.1 quarter, Macallan was up by 1-1/2 lengths. He opened up by two lengths at the 1:00 half and then, six lengths at the 1:29.2 three-quarters. Using a :28.2 last quarter, Macallan won by seven lengths in 1:58.

Unraced at two and three years old, Macallan has accumulated $143,455 in career earnings from the age of four. Of the seven-year-old gelding's 40 starts, 21 were made last year in 2022 in which Macallan posted his career-best year with a record of 7-3-1 and $93,715 earned. The Timothy Cherwaiko trainee is a son of Credit Winner and the Conway Hall mare Margarita Hall. Cherwaiko co-owns Macallan with Gary Green of Puslinch, Ont.
