Blizzard Begins At Mohawk Park

On the heels of the biggest snowfall of the season in Southwestern Ontario, the Blizzard Series got underway during Thursday’s 10-race card at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

It was the streaking Awesome Hill taking home top honours in her $18,000 split for the tandem of driver Doug McNair and trainer Chantal Mitchell.

The four-year-old daughter of Sunshine Beach-Taxi Fare Hanover muscled to the lead from Post 4 and carved out fractions of :29.4, :59 and 1:28.1 before sprinting home in :28.1 to win by three-quarters of a length over Bottomoftheninth. Addictivebehaviour was third.

Sent off as the 2-5 favourite, Awesome Hill extended her winning streak to four-in-a-row for owner Tom Hill of Hamilton, ON. The victory was the seventh of her career and the winner’s share of the purse lifted her lifetime earnings to $84,614.

Intothemysticmoon used come-from-behind tactics to strike in the second division for driver Louis-Philippe Roy and trainer Wayne Dunn.

The three-year-old daughter of Artspeak-Mystical Moon got away sixth and held her position while Ceaseless and Emmy Lou Hayes took turns on the lead through fractions of :27.4 and :58. Emmy Lou Hayes then powered the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:28 while feeling pressure from the first-over favourite, Belina. Intothemysticmoon spotted up third-over around the final turn and then used a :27.1 final frame to win by 4-1/2 lengths over Broken in 1:56. Belina settled for third prize.

Stephen Upson of Georgetown, ON bred and owns the sophomore who now owns a 2-1-0 record in her first three starts of the season. The three-time winner has banked $33,520 to date.

Thursday’s card also featured the second leg of the Pop Up Claiming Series for female pacers, with a set of divisions served up.

Miss Rockadali went down the road in the opening split for the team of driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Richard Moreau.

The seven-year-old daughter of Dali-Southern Rock rolled the field through fractions of :29.2, :59.4 and 1:29.4 before kicking home in :28.2 to win by three-quarters of a length over Woodmere Rollily in 1:58.1. Rhythm Seelster was third.

Ecurie Richard Moreau Inc and Tess Waxman shared ownership on the distaffer who was claimed from the winning effort. It was her first tally of the season and the 19th of her career. She’s banked over $170,000 to date.

Erikas Shadow won as she pleased in the second division for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Gerard Demers.

Moonlitebeach and Runaway Heiress took turns on the lead through fractions of :28.3, :58.3 and 1:29.1 before Erikas Shadow powered up and kicked home in :29.2 to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Moonlitebeach in 1:59. Taking home third prize was Watt Machs Me Win.

The six-year-old daughter of Shadow Play-Erikastar Mindale, who was owned by Carmelo Scime and Les Ecuries GLD Inc, was claimed from the winning effort. It was her first win of the season from three attempts. The 10-time winner has banked over $120,000 to date.
