As a two-year-old, Longshot made eight starts on the Ohio fair circuit, winning three races. One would think winning the Ohio Sires Stakes final as a three-year-old would be a longshot, but that’s what the Long Tom gelding did on the way to being named Ohio's 2022 Three-Year-Old Trotting Colt of the Year.

Trained by Scott Cox and owned by Wayne Mast Jr. and Callam Racing, Longshot won nine of 16 races and earned $306,974 in his sophomore season. He was bred by Perry Coblentz.

Cox credited Wes Hershberger, Longshot’s trainer as a two-year-old, for laying the foundation.

“I’ve been very blessed to get this horse after his two-year-old year campaign and be in the finals with him as a three-year-old. It’s great because you can see them grow and mature.“

Cox said they took their time with Longshot at the beginning of the year.  He finished fourth in the first leg of the Ohio Sires Stakes but got on a roll after that, hitting the board in eight of the next nine race with six wins.

Longshot won three legs of the Ohio Sires Stakes, the Ohio Breeders Championship and the Ohio Sires Stakes final.

Longshot will be honoured at the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association Annual Awards Banquet on Jan. 14 at the Hilton Columbus-Polaris in Columbus, Ohio.

The 2022 Ohio Horse of the Year will be announced at the annual awards banquet.
