Shebestingin Retired

Trainer Joe Holloway confirmed to Trot Insider that world champion pacing mare Shebestingin has been officially retired.

In 2013, Shebestingin made harness racing history at The Red Mile with a stunning 1:47 mile that cemented her status as the fastest pacing filly or mare of all-time. The only three-year-old pacers faster: Hes Watching and Somebeachsomewhere.

That record beat the former record by seven lengths (American Jewel at 1:48.2).

She concluded her sophomore season with wins in three out of four starts and came back strong as a four-year-old. Holloway said that she has no soundness issues but "she just doesn't fire" like she did as a three-year-old. In her most recent start, she finished second at The Meadowlands in 1:52.3.

"With the trip she got the other night she should have exploded [off cover] and she didn't," noted Holloway. "Noel Daley's horse (Delightful Dragon) won that race, and he said the same thing.

"It's good for her, she doesn't owe us anything."

Owned by Val D'Or Farms of Millstone, N.J., Ted Gewertz of New York, N.Y. and the L And L Devisser partnership of Holland, Mich., Shebestingin (Bettors Delight - Armbro Tussle) retires with a 36-18-6-1 summary and $760,038 in earnings. While not yet confirmed, Holloway told Trot Insider that a decision on mating will come later in the week and that two-time U.S. Pacer of the Year Captaintreacherous has been 'short-listed' as a stallion option.
