September Stakes Continue At Mohawk

Grand Circuit action returns to Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (Sept. 10) with eliminations for the Milton Stakes and a number of highly-touted younger stars in action on the undercard.

The Milton Stakes, an event for aged pacing mares, will have two eliminations on the 13-race card while pacing sophomores will spar in the Simcoe Stakes and pacing freshmen head postward in the Champlain Stakes.

Elimination one for the Milton draws two millionaires in Fire Start Hanover and Amazing Dream N. Fire Start Hanover, a Breeders Crown winner at two, ships north off back-to-back wins at Harrah's Philadelphia while Amazing Dream N tries for her third win stateside following cheque-grabbing finishes in the Dorothy Haughton Memorial and Lady Liberty. Richard "Nifty" Norman trains Fire Start Hanover, who will start from post two, and Linda Toscano will send Amazing Dream N from post five.

Test Of Faith starts from the outermost post in the field of seven mares facing off in the second Milton elimination. The Brett Pelling trainee finished second in a Winners-Over Pace at Harrah's Philadelphia in her most recent start, but ships in pursuit of her second Mohawk stakes win after winning the Roses Are Red earlier this year. She matches up against Mikala, one of the few mares to best Test Of Faith this year who starts from post three. O'Brien Award winner So Much More also has her hat in the ring as the Don Beatson-trained millionaire scores from post five.

A field of six gathers for the first Simcoe Stakes division for pacing sophomores, carded as the fourth race. Pennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS) champ Fourever Boy returns to Canada, where he finished seventh when last here for the North America Cup. Tim Twaddle trains the starter out of post four against a field including Ron, who finished fourth in the North America Cup, and Sport Secret, who enters off a second-place finish in an Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold division.

Division two of the Simcoe, slated as Race 9, pits Beach Glass against five others as he rests under $9,000 shy of $1 million in earnings. The Brent MacGrath pupil starts from post five against OSS star Stonebridge Helios (who starts from post four) and PASS Championship runner-up Greatest Ending (post six).

Sophomore pacing fillies go in a single Simcoe dash in the seventh race. Local fillies have an opportunity to thrive, but will have to go through Nick Gallucci trainee Silver Label. Starting from post three, she'll look to add a 12th win to her 18-start resume while also entering off a three-race win streak. Her competitors, in a 10-horse field, include OSS Gold winner I Love Ongait (post two) and James Lynch Consolation winner Balance (post eight).

Fillies and colts will each compete in a division of the Champlain. The fillies' dash, carded as Race 5, draws 10 led by Big Big Plans, winner of the $155,000 Battle of the Belles in early August. She starts alongside Shawn Steacy trainee Sylvia Hanover, who earned a game victory in the $117,150 Eternal Camnation on Aug. 27 over this oval. The filly she narrowly beat, Caviart Davia, starts from post eight inside her Tony Alagna-trained stablemate Bankers Luck, who won the other Eternal Camnation division.

The colts and geldings Champlain split lures an overflow field of 11, leaving one in the second tier. Save America will look to double above the 49th parallel after cruising to a 1:51.4 win in his Nassagaweya division on Aug. 27. He starts from post four while his stablemate Ants Marching scores from post eight off an upset victory in a Kindergarten Series prelim at The Meadowlands. Nassagaweya Stakes runner-ups Captain Batboy and Ace Of Aces also compete, starting from posts five and six respectively.
