Sea Can Sharp In Dream Of Glory Trot

Sea Can

There's something about the Hanover Raceway surface and / or the fresh Grey-Bruce County air that sure suits Sea Can.

The trotter has 21 lifetime starts, and five wins from those appearances. Four of those five wins have come at Hanover Raceway, with the most recent a victory in the 2022 Dream Of Glory Trot.

Driver Scott Young settled 5-2 second choice Sea Can into fourth early as Renegade Gypsy (Mario Baillargeon) carved out the fractions on the front end. After a :29.1 opening quarter, favoured Drinks At Home (Travis Henry) started a first-over attack from third and Young followed that cover through the 1:00.1 and 1:29.2 middle panels.

If the question was when would Scott Young move Sea can, the answer was around the far turn. Sea Can had clear daylight when the field straightened for home and he responded with a strong stretch rally to the hit the wire a half-length ahead of Drinks At Home, with the mile timed in 1:59.3. Promise For Life (Bruce Richardson) rallied well to complete the top trio.

"Really happy with the way he performed today," said trainer Mark Etsell. "Perfect trip, kind of what we were looking for; second over, and he can pop pretty good."

Sea Can ($6.90) is trained and co-owned by Etsell, who shares ownership of the Muscle Mass - SOS Respect sophomore with Terry  Devos of Langton and Peter Porter of Port Dover, Ont. He's just the second horse to sweep Hanover's Balanced Image and Dream Of Glory trots, and the lion's share of purse gives Sea Can a career bounty of $111,918 in earnings.

Earlier on the card, Illgetmyown Thanks ($6.50) got up in the final strides to pick off favoured Champagne Phil in the $10,000 Gail Murray Invitation Pace. Travis Henry engineered the winning effort aboard six-year-old  Illgetmyown Thanks, a son of Shadown Play - Talula Seelster, for trainer and co-owner Dale Fritz, Michael Sawyer Edward Acheson and B W P Stable.
