Sweet Amira Sizzles At Mohawk

Lady Lou

Making just her second qualifying start, Sweet Amira helped give her connections confidence in her six-figure price tag with a sharp qualifying win during the Friday (July 22) session at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The second dash of the morning featured seven rookie pacing fillies, and it produced the fastest mile of the dashes for two-year-olds. In that split, Louis-Philippe Roy settled Sweet Amira into fourth early, allowing Nulli Secondus (Doug McNair) to make the first call in :29.3 before making a liar of that rival down the backside. Sweet Amira brushed to the front before the :59.4 half and maintained no less than a two-length advantage the rest of the way. A 1:28 third station was followed by a :27.1 closer to trip the time in 1:55.1. Nulli Secondus (a play on the Latin phrase for second to none) finished in the runner-up spot, more than three lengths in arrears.

A $150,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase, Sweet Amira (Sweet Lou - Bolt Of Thunder) is trained by Chantal Mitchell for owners Lindsey & Connie Rankin of Lexington, Mich. The filly is a full-sister to the mare pictured above, speedy stakes winner Lady Lou p,3,1:50.3 ($324,766).
