Strangles Webinar Video Available

Biosecurity, communication and planning were three key factors identified by Industry Experts to managing Strangles in an online webinar facilitated by Standardbred Canada (SC) on May 26.

Strangles, a respiratory disease of horses, can be an emotionally and financially challenging disease for participants in the horse racing industry. With knowledge, transparency and appropriate action, the industry can work together to protect the horses and limit the spread of this common infectious disease.

SC facilitated the webinar attended by members, fans, and racing officials from across the country. The panel of industry experts included:

  • Alison Moore DVM, DVSc, DipACVIM, DipACVSMR, OMAFRA

  • J Trenton McClure DVM, MSc, DipACVIM, Atlantic Veterinary College

  • Matthew Saab MSc, Diagnostic Services, Atlantic Veterinary College

Moderated by Lee Drake, SC Director and Manager of Racing and Broadcasting at Red Shores, PEI, the webinar included an overview of Strangles, information on diagnostic testing, methods and resources for managing an outbreak, best practices for protocols, biosecurity, prevention, and vaccination programs, reviewed the importance of communication, and concluded with a recap of lessons learned.

SC would like to extend its sincere appreciation to Dr. Alison Moore, Dr. J McClure and Matthew Saab for the informative presentation, and to Lee Drake for moderating the webinar.

The webinar was recorded and is available for viewing below. The Power Point presentation from the webinar is also available here.

SC is planning to facilitate future webinars on equine health and welfare. If you have a suggestion for a topic, please email [email protected].
